Police Constable
When a person is recruited into the police force as a constable that person receives five months of recruit training at the Regional Police Training Centre, Barbados.
Through our comprehensive training course you will learn to:
- protect the public from violence
- provide a reassuring presence in the community
- support victims of crime and offer help to those who have witnessed crimes
- investigate crimes
You would move on other departments and ranks as your level of service and competence develops. A police constable’s duties involved a lot of interaction with the public, either as:-
- Community police officer
- Beat and patrol officer
- Marine police
- Traffic officer, or
- Specialist Criminal Investigator

Auxiliary Police
An auxiliary officer has all the powers of a police constable. You will receive training, which will enable you to perform your duties in the following areas such as,
- Controlling traffic
- Regulating processions and assembles
- Preserve the public peace
- Protect life and property
- Perform station orderly duties
Depending on where you work, you could:
- deal with minor offences
- offer early intervention to deter people from committing offences
- provide support for front-line policing
- conduct house-to-house enquiries
- guard crime scenes
- provide crime prevention advice

Special Constable
This is a paid, usually part-time position, that you can undertake alongside your main career.
How would you like becoming a Special Constable to serve your community and bring your expertise into the area in order to maintain law and order?
Do you want:
- to give something back to the community, providing a policing presence in your home area
- to learn new skills and gain valuable experience
- to challenge yourself
- to learn first-hand about the police force before committing to a full-time job there
- to have a second chance if you've unsuccessfully applied for a job as a regular officer.
We need you to become a special constable in the force and provide support for police on foot and mobile patrols. You can also provide crowd control support at crime scenes or other public events.
Terms and conditions: Police Constables
(a) Starting salary for a new Police Constables recruit holding a high school certificate
Starting salary on day one is $22,770 plus $4,200 national security allowance. In total up to $26,970 per annum.
After 2 years service after completing 6 months training and a further 18 months
successful probationary period this salary rises to $28,134 plus $4,200 (national security allowance). In total after 2 year service constables will receive an annual salary of up to $32,334.
(b) Starting salary for new Police Constable recruit holding a degree
To make sure we can attract the most academically qualified candidates:
- Individuals entering the organisation with an Associates Degree will have a starting salary of $29,088 (this includes national security allowance)
- Individuals entering the organisation with a Bachelors Degree will have a starting salary of $32,618 (this includes national security allowance); and
- Individuals entering the organisation with a Masters Degree will have a starting salary of $37,560 (this includes national security allowance).
Again these salaries rise significantly after 2 years of successful service.
(c) Additional Benefits for all Police Constable Recruits:
- 5 months professional training at the regional police training school
- Full government pension after 25 years of service
- Free medical cover whilst in service
- Additional allowances dependant upon specialism or posting area
